Using technology

Canvas

Your main technology platform will be Canvas. This is our Virtual Learning Environment and all of your modules, induction and handbooks will be available here. When you log into your induction within Canvas you will find a number of different guides to help you become familiar with Canvas. If you are unsure and have any questions Canvas Support is available 24/7 using the Help menu on the bottom left-hand menu within the Canvas platform.

You will need an internet connection to participate in discussions and assignments, access readings, transfer coursework, and receive feedback from your programme and module leader.

There is an expectation students will have a basic working knowledge of computers and the internet, as well as access to a computer with a broadband (DSL, cable, fibre, satellite) internet connection. While aspects of the programme can be undertaken through a mobile device, the app does not include all features in Canvas. We strongly recommend ensuring students have access to a desktop/laptop computer for these studies.

Canvas runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android, or any other device with a modern web browser. All students have access to Microsoft 365 and its apps, including email, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Canvas runs on Mac, Windows, and mobile device operating systems iOS and Android. Download the free Canvas App for use on your mobile device. Canvas recommends using the most recent releases of the following browsers and applications.

  • Chrome
  • Firefox
  • Safari
  • Internet Explorer

Please click here for specific and most current information on supported browsers. (This page includes a browser checker.)

Canvas pages within a mobile browser are only supported when an action in the app links directly to the browser, such as when you take certain types of quizzes. Canvas offers limited support for native mobile browsers on tablet devices. Please note: mobile browsers and apps do not have the same full functionality available when using Canvas in a fully supported desktop browser.

For details, please reference the limited-support mobile browser guidelines

To stay current with your course anytime and anywhere, please download the Canvas Student app on Android and iOS devices. The mobile app is the best mobile user experience for using Canvas.

Office 365

Office 365 is available free to ALL students, supported by ICT services. Office 365 has applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive. To access this software, go to 365.lincoln.ac.uk and log in with your University email address (studentIDnumber@students.lincoln.ac.uk) and password. You will then be redirected to an area where you can configure your OneDrive and install Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Outlook for your student email.

Further information is available on the University of Lincoln ICT website.

Student Email

Every student will be issued with a University of Lincoln email address – ending in “@students.lincoln.ac.uk “.  This is accessible in MS Outlook within Office 365 (see below).

Your username is your email address for all University applications.

All emails and notifications from Canvas or the University will be sent to your student email address, so you should check this regularly.

Information on accessing your email on mobile devices can be found on the University of Lincoln website.
