FAQs

What experience does a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) have?

Your PAT is an academic member of staff from your School. While their subject expertise may not always match the specific modules you are studying, they are well-placed to guide you through your academic journey.

When will I meet my PAT?

Each School operates its own Personal Academic Tutoring Programme. You will be told about the specific meeting points during the first few weeks of term.

How often will I meet with my PAT?

You will have at least one individual meeting with your PAT each term to check on your progress. They will also offer regular drop-in times if you need additional support. At your first meeting, ask about their office hours and the best way to contact them.

How can my PAT help me?

Your PAT is your main academic contract throughout your course.

They can help you:

  • Settle into university and develop effective study habits.
  • Make sense of assessment feedback and build confidence in independent learning.
  • Manage your studies and refer you to specialist support if needed.
  • Get involved in university life and explore your career goals.
Will all my PAT meetings be one-to-one?

Not always. Alongside individual meetings with your PAT, you will also be part of a small tutor group with other students from your programmes. These group sessions, scheduled on your timetable, focus on activities to support your academic development. The format may vary by programme, so look out for details during Welcome Week.

What should I do if I am finding it difficult to connect with my PAT?

If you are finding it hard to connect with your PAT or have concerns, don’t worry, support is available. Each School has a Senior PAT who oversees the tutoring programme and can help. You can contact them through your School Office.
