The follow are a list of all typical assessment activities that you may undertake to test your learning and understanding during your studies include (some are specific to certain programmes):
- Examinations (open book, closed book, oral and other time constrained activities)
- Essays
- Reports
- Oral presentations
- Poster presentations and displays
- Reflective learning journals
- Online assessment
- Multiple choice assessments
- Practical demonstrations
- Practical examinations (Medical School)
- Group work (varying forms)
- Performances
- Event organisation and management
- Dissertations (typically final year, level 3, and postgraduate taught students)
- Thesis (postgraduate research)
Please check your module handbooks and/or VLE (Virtual learning Environment) module site for specific programme and Department/School information and details of exactly how you will be assessed.
Some of the methods listed above may be new and/or challenging for you. If you are uncertain as to what is required or how to prepare for them, speak with your module tutor or the Study Advice Service.
You can usually only attempt each assessment task once, however if resits are possible your grade will be capped at the passing mark.
It is therefore very important to ensure you know what to do for the assessments and achieve the best you can in these activities. Many tutors provide guidance on assessed work as part of the module teaching programme. If you are unclear about what is expected of you, then ask your tutor for guidance before you submit work for assessment. This is particularly important for Year 3 (level 3) advanced entrant students and taught postgraduate students.
