Introduction to online learning
Online learning at university underpins and enhances face to face teaching.
This blended approach will take a variety of forms and may be very different from how you have been previously taught.
The use of different digital tools and platforms, including some like Microsoft Teams that are commonly used in a professional environment, will provide you with skills and experience that will help you in your future career.
If any teaching event (in Panopto, Collaborate or MS Teams) is recorded you do not need to share your camera or audio if you choose not to. Participation is voluntary, but we recommend engaging with the teaching as much as you can to get the most out of the learning experience. The videos created are made for and shared with your module cohort to benefit your studies.
Preparing to learn online
- Try to find a quiet space for online sessions
- Protect your privacy with background changing functions
- Be aware that sensitive topics may be discussed that may affect other people in the room with you
- Go to the library if you prefer to view lectures in an academic space
- Audio
- Video
- Chat
- …or all of the above!
Over time you will feel more comfortable with online communication and can ‘increase’ your voice, perhaps beginning with text chat contributions and leading up to video and vocal interaction.
Different students will have different preferences and your choice of interaction is up to you, but remember, the more you contribute, the more you will gain for each session.
- Live lectures – turn off mic and video, raise hand for questions
- Live seminars – choose your voice and get ready to raise your hand if you would like to interact
- Remember, you can engage with your tutors further by attending drop-ins, workshops, tutorials and meetings
- Keep an eye out for these opportunities on your module Blackboard pages or in module handbooks
